What are these FAQ's

The FAQs ( Frequently Asked Questions ) are the most frequently questions about an argument; in this case eMule.
Here we have the common question we have to answer in the newsgroups free.it.software.emule and it-alt.comp.software.filesharing.emule; we think that, like all the FAQs, we will not resolve all the problems but at least to give some suggestions.
So let's have a nice reading and we hope you'll improve your knowledge about emule with our recommendations.

Introduction [go up]

What is eMule?
eMule is an open source file sharing software.
It was born following another filesharing software, eDonkey2000, but it integrates a lot of improvements and two different kinds of networks: the ed2k (a server based network) and a version of Kademlia network.
Differently from a lot of p2p softwares (for example various Torrent client) you can find an incredible amount of material in italian language or in the language you need.
eMule promotes the download of files poorely shared or rares that are very difficult to be downloaded with other softwares. Besides it integrates a system (called credit system) that allows to promote the clients who maximize its upload of files, that is to say who shares more files with the other eMule users.
Thanks to the comments system a client can indicate, to the other clients connected to the network, that a file is a fake or corrupted or with a low quality (speaking about an audio or a video file).

The official eMule web site is:

Questions and answers

Basic questions [go up]

Q. Where can I download eMule?
A. Downloading eMule is possible at the follow link:

http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=18&rm=download

Q. Should I pay for eMule?
A. No! eMule is an opensource project, so you DON'T have to pay anything.
Download eMule only from the official web site, because other web sites could give you payment versions or containing virus/malware.
Never trust web sites that offer eMule payment versions because they are just frauds.
To download eMule:

http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=18&rm=download

Q. Is eMule illegal?
A. No. eMule is a positively legal program and you will stay in the legality until you download/share files without cpyright. Illegal could be the use you do (downloading copyrighted files), but eMule is and will be forever a legal program.

Q. Is there a Linux release?
A. Yes, it's name is aMule.
Official aMule site is this:

http://www.amule.org/

Q. Can I install eMule on Linux SO? I don't like aMule.
A. No, but it is possible to install the Morphxt (modified version of eMule) on Linux using wine
( http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine )

Q. Can I use two eMule at the same time?
A. It is strongly advised don't using two eMules (or however two peer to peer programs) in the same time because together they would share the bandwidth.
You can use in two different pcs of your home, but the bandwidth will be equally shared between the two eMules. In addiction, you should use different ports for the two eMule, set both pcs with static IP and open the corresponding ports in your router.

Update and eMule's Files [go up]

Q. A new eMule version has been released! How can I update the old version?
A. There are at least two ways to update your eMule: a simple procedure (the first) and a second one, a little more complicated (for "experts"):

1. Download eMule installer (from official web site) and overwrite the previous version. If when you restart the pc, Wizard eMule starts, stop it by pressing "Cancel".

2. Download binary version (from official eMule web site) and extract the contents of the zip file in a directory.
Go where eMule is installed an make a Backup copy (you never know) of "emule.exe" file.
Take the "emule.exe" extracted and overwrite on the previous version.
If when you restart the pc, Wizard eMule starts, stop it by pressing "Cancel". If something should not work, you can restore your previous backup.

Note: if there is a version change (e.g. from 0.48c to 0.49a) we advise you to make a new installation and to save only the necessary files to keep the credits.

Q. Before updating, what should I save?
A. It is necessary to provide for a backup of the entire folders Config, Temp, (temporary files) and Incoming (completed files).
Depending of the kind of updating you are going to do, it should be necessary to restore the old Temp and Incoming or give eMule the new paths of the two folders. Inside Config folder you will find preference.dat, cryptkey.dat e clients.met files that you should copy to the new emule so you don't lose your credits.

Q. What are files inside Config folder for?
A. Brief explanation of main files:

preferences. dat - contains your userhash.
cryptkey.dat - contains the private key for the safe authentication.
clients.met - contains the credits of the users that sent you datas.
known.met - contains datas concerning files you shared.
Known2.met - contains files hash A.I.C.H. (in the older eMule versions)
Knownn2_64.met - contains files hash A.I.C.H. (in the newer eMule versions)
server.met - contains servers list
addresses.dat - contains http:// address to one or more server's list.
category.ini - contains the categories list you made.
preferences.ini - contains the settings you gave to your eMule.
statistics.ini - contains all data of your statistic.
shareddir.dat - contains the list of your shared folders.
fileinfo.ini - contains the comments and the valutations you gave to your shared files.
nodes.dat - contains the list of nodes' Kad when you connect.

Q. How could I import eMule temp files to another pc?
A. Copy temp files (the "part" files that are in the temporary files directory) to pc.
Then, choose: Tools, "Import Download (eMule, eDonkey, Overnet)..."
>From here, you can add all the old temp files just choosing "Add" and selecting the directory containing the files you want.

Fake [go up]

Q. Are there fakes and porn on eMule?
A. Unfortunately, there is people that rename the files, therefore there is the risk to download files that aren't what you expected.
There are some ways to identify if one file is that we want or not, however It's not true that they are all porn. Fortunately there are "good" files too.

Q. Are there more fakes on the Kad net?
A. No! Kad net cannot keep more fakes than ed2k net because it's always made with the same clients (eMule and other compatible clients), so at most you could find the same fakes of the only servers net.

Q. How can I identify a fake?
A. After you start downloading the file you want, just go to "Transfer" window -> right click on the file -> select "Info on the file..." Select the form "Name";
All you have to read are the names that the other users gave to that file (used name | number of users that adopted it). If the most correspond to the one you were looking for, then it's ok. If, on the contrary, you find many names that are not corresponding to the one you are looking for, It's a fake.
Learning to use this method, you can't be wrong.

Preview [go up]

Q. Why i'm not able to see the preview?
A. Probably You haven't still downloaded the chunks of files necessary to be able to see at least the preview of the file.
If you want to make this process quicker, you should enable this option. Click on Options, File, "Try to download the parts for preview first".

Q. How can I see downloading files' preview?
A. Right click on the file in the transfer window and select the voice "preview". If you cannot click on it, it means that you haven't downloaded enough chunks of this file.

Q. I can see downloading files' preview but I can't hear the audio (or can't see the video). Why?
A. Probably in your pc aren't installed audio codecs (or video codecs) necessary for reproducing audio/video files. You should install the codecs or use a program that has got them already integrated ( e.g. Videolan http://www.videolan.org ).

Q. I downloaded Videolan but I still see the previews with Windows Media Player.
A. You should set Videolan player on Options-File-Player to see the previews. Click on "browse" and look for Videolan among the installed programs. Unselect the voice "create a copy for the preview".

Q. Can I see the preview in a zip/rar file?
A. If you can click on the preview, you can see the list of the file inside the record, but normally you can't open these files until the download is complete.

Icons and progressbar [go up]

Q. What these "ii" on the files' names under transfers are?
A. Simply shows that the file has been voted/commented.
Follow this order:

Two red ii: Vote Not Valid / corrupted / Fake
one red one white: Poor Vote
one yellow and one white: Satisfactory Vote
one green and one white: Good Vote
Two green ii: Very good Vote
Two grey ii: The file has been commented but not voted

Q. On the right down corner there is a flashing icon representing a small envelope. What does it mean?
A. You received a message from someone. If there is an exclamation point it means that it's still to read; all you have to do is double clicking on it, or going to the screen "messages".

Q. I added some people to the friends' list. What does the various colors of the icon mean?
A. Colors description:

Green: connected friend who is downloading from you.
Brown: connected friend who isn't downloading from you.
Grey: not connected friend

The green heart on the icon means that you gave a slot friend to that person

Q. On the Tray Bar eMule has a black bandage on the eyes. What it means?
A. It means that you have low ID on the servers, Kad firewalled or both of them.
If the icon is grey it means that you are not connected to server/kad nets.

Q. Looking through eMule's bar I did eliminate some icons. How can I restore them?
A. Right click on the eMule bar (or on any button) and click on "Personalize the toolbar"; from there you can add/remove the buttons of the bar.

Q. Why some clients / sources have the icon of eMule while others have different icons?
A. eMule points out through an icon beside the nick of people that use different p2p program. The greatest part they are mods of emule or other versions.

Q. What the the colors of progress bar in the transfer windows mean?
A. The meaning of that colors is:

Green: Completed file;
Green with a yellow line in top: completing file:
Red: File without sources or waiting for contacting sources
Blue: File in download with a lot of sources
Azure: File in download with a few of sources
Grey: Part of the file already downloaded
Yellow: Part of the file downloading right now
Yellow and Black oblique Bars: you see following question
Bordeaux: File in state "stop"
Violet: File in pause (if the file has a lot of sources)
Light blue: File in break (if the file has few sources)

Note: The tonalities that go from the blue to the clear blue point out the quantity of sources. More dark part means more sources available.

Q. The files in download stop by themselves and their bar turns on yellow and black lines!
A. It usually means that there is not enough space on the hard disk to download that file; to make it keep on downloading, it is necessary to pause the other files in download or trying to make free space on the hard disk.
Sometimes it's a generic eMule error that you can resolve just restarting it, or an error due to the damaged file caused by moving destination folder without re-setting the path in Options-Folders.

Q. Why some files remain with the green bar but with the state as ''completing''? Do I lost that files or can I recover them?
A. If the file has big dimensions, all it takes is waiting for a few minutes; sometimes a reboot of emule resolves the problem.
If the file remains at the state ''completing'', proceed as it follows:
1) see the infos at the file to know what file part it corresponds (for instance 021.part.met);
2) with eMule closed move to another folder (or for safety, copy) the 3 temp files combined to the file (for instance 021.part.met, 021.part, 021.part.met.bak);
3) rename the file 021.part putting the true name and the true extension of the file (for instance ubuntu_8.1_ita.rar)

Q. In the column sources at the transfer windows, the sources are suitable this way:
5/44/60 (2)
What does every number mean?

A. In the specific example, numbers means this:

5 sources in state a4af (contacted for another file)
44 useful sources (that is those for which you are in queue)
60 total sources
2 sources currently in download

From that is deduced that 16 sources will be in "full queue" or "not necessary parts"

Search files [go up]

Q. When I'm looking for something, I find few files or nothing.
A. With the kad search you can find everything; it's slower but it's not subject to the problems of fake servers that give you fake results in the searches, or few results. In the search server the results depends on the server which you are connected to or however from the servers that you have in your list. Besides, since a while ago, servers have quite a lot problems both in the connection and in searches.

Q. I use Comodo Personal Firewall and search on KAD give very few results, sometimes nothing!
A. You have to open Comodo and select the card "Firewall" (up to the right) - > card "Advanced" (on the left) - > select "Attack Detection Settings" - > card "Miscellaneous", therefore assure yourself that "Block Fragmented IP Datagrams" and "Do Protocol Analysis" are disabled (not selected). Done this should be everything ok.
Please note: this is worth for the version 3 of Comodo; if you are using the 2, the names of the options to be deactivate are the same, but they are found in a different menù.

Q. How can I drop the list that appear automatically in the search box?
A. You have to go to Options, Aspect and under "Automatic (chronology function) Completion" you have to deselect "Active." To reset only the chronology, always in the same window of Options, click on "Reset" or press ctrl+canc in the search box.

Q. When I search on kad net, an error message appears that says: "too short key word".
A. With the kad search, the initial word cannot be less than the 3 characters. To obviate to this drawback is enough to re-phrase the search.
E.g. you cannot look for the sentence: "my new song" but you can write : "new song"

Sharing [go up]

Q. What's the better to share?
A. It's normal not to leave all you download in sharing forever, sooner or later the hardisk is filled (usually also very quickly). At the moment to choose whether to leave and what not, it' better to leave in sharing folder the rarest files, while those with a lot of sources (100-200 or more, it depends from the dimension and from the type of the file) can be cancelled without problems.
In every case it is good norm to leave the files just completed in sharing for at least a few days.

Q. Is it true that the more file I have in sharing, the more I download?
A. Absolutely false; to have too many file in sharing can be self-defeating both for the discourse credits (you for instance have in sharing 5000 films, but at the moment you're downloading games)and for the connection to the servers (some servers have a limit of file).
It is worthwhile to share a suitable number of files that also allows to earn credits for the files that you are downloading.

Q. I have my shared files on an external hard disk, that I sometimes turn on-off. Every time that I turn on after i didn't use it, eMule starts again the hashing of the files. Is there a way to avoid it?
A. eMule forgets about that files if even only once turns on and it doesn't find the connected hd with its shared folder. So you have two ways: or you hold the HD always turned on or you have to put them in an internal HD (or at least some of them).

Q. I have some files file in sharing but I would like to spread particularly one of them. How can I do?
A. You can avoid to leave only the mentioned file in sharing using the priorities. From screen Shared File, right click on the file, priority - release. Some mods have a further priority called powershare (useful for the releasers). In this way you will favor the upload of that file.

Mods (modified versions) [go up]

Q. I have heard that the Mods are faster than the official version; is it true?
A. No. The modified versions of emule (that are called ''mods'') don't avoid to download faster than the official version.
At the most they contain characteristics that complete/improve the official version of eMule.
Distrust of any mod that affirms the contrary.

Q. Is it Emule Plus better than official eMule?
A. NO! It's a parallel project to eMule (been born as mod and then become an autonomous project) but very less valid and above all rather old-fashioned both as functionality than as ability of download. The greatest fault is the fact that doesn't implement the kad net. It's absolutely recommended the use of the official eMule quoted to the beginning of the FAQs without any exception.

Q. If I switch from the official version to a mod (or the contrary) do I lose the credits?
A. No, providing that you save your files related to the credits (preference.dat, cryptkey.dat and clients.met), the temp and the incoming folder. You have to put this files into the relative folders of the new installation.

Leecher Mods [go up]

Q. What is a leecher mod?
A. It's a modified version of eMule (pratically a mod) where however have been implemented features that are against the philosophy of eMule.
With these leechers mods is possible (for example) to put to Zero the quantity of data in upload, to climb over the queues, to steal the hash user to other eMule users...
Some leechers famous mods are: the AppleJuice and the K.Or.T. 3.

Q. Why is it not advisable to use a leecher mod?
A. Besides the discourse "correctness", by now all the emule versions have an anti-leecher filter that bans (or it reduces the score) of the leecher user. Therefore, even if initially you will download at a high speed, in a few minutes you will be ban from the other users and the speed will lower in a few times.

Kad Network [go up]

Q. What is Kademlia?
A. Kademlia is substantially a net without server.
In Kademlia every connected client to the net act "as bridge" for the search of the available sources for a file without passing all across to one or more servers.
Unfortunately its weak point is the initial lack of fixed client from which to depart for being connected to the same net; every client in fact is formed by the single eMule users (or by a compatible software).
Thing that instead with the servers it is immediate because is fixed the server to which to connect (or at least it is hoped it remains so).

Q. I can't connect to the kad net. The arrow is red.
A. For the first connection to the kad net you must connect to a server, to put some files in download (file with good sources) and press "bootstrap" in kad screen. Or you can download the file nodes.dat from the site www.nodes-dat.com and put it in the folder config of emule (with closed emule). From that site you can also (with open emule) use the automatic procedure choosing "add to eMule".

Q. Are there other ways to connect to the kad net?
A. You can make the bootstrap from IP address and door (inserting them in the special boxes), for instance with the IP and the door of one friend of yours that it is connected to the kad net.

Q. What does it mean the color of the little balls in kad screen? Must they be all green?
A. The color doesn't influence the speed of download, but simply points out the number of failed connections toward that node.
During the connection it is normal to have them red or orange; after a while they will change color.
Red (type 4): 4 errors, will be removed
Orange (type 3): 3 errors
Yellow (type 2): 2 errors
Blue (type 1): 1 error
Green (type 0): contact happened without any prooblem

Q. How can I do to make a search on the kad net?
A. First of all you must be connected to the kad net (or kad + ed2k too); then on "search" select as method of search "kad net".

Server [go up]

Q. Is it true that with the server net I can download more quickly?
A. No, it's false. Only searching is faster. Thanks to the exchange of the sources, all it takes is being connected to the only net kad (or at the contrary) and the connected sources will also be linked to the other net. Therefore, the speed doesn't depends on being connected to the servers too.

Q. What the spy servers are?
A. Fictitious Servers, created for picking up information of the emule users, particularly what they download and they share. They are often created by official Corporates (e.g. Watch of Department of Internal Revenue), from the so-called "Majors" (record/manufacturing houses of video games or film), from associations of the record producers (e.g. RIAA and SIAE) or from third parts companies.
The information so acquired are often been used for undertaking legal actions and frauds against the users.

Q. Is it worthwhile to use the servers?
A. Yes and No, individual choice and sometimes obligatory (for instance with umts/gprs and with the providers for which kad is always firewalled). The servers become less and less important and they will probably, in a few years, be completely supplanted. If well set they however offer a search engine more, they don't constitute a further factor of danger and they are of support to the clients that doesn't implement Kademlia or that can't be able to benefit. Some people prefers to use the only kad net (see the question on SpyServers).

Q. After a few days I always find my server list empty.
A. eMule drops the servers from the list after some failed connections. You can increase the number of attempts from option-server-eliminates the inactive servers after.... (set 5 or at the most 10).

Q. I don't succeed in connecting to any servers among those that I have in list; what can I do?
A. First of all, delete them all (right mouse on a server and "eliminates all the servers"); then download again the server list from a "reliable" list (safe 100% lists don't exist). If you still can't succeed in connecting, it's possible that your TCP door can't communicate with the outside.

Q. Could you suggest me a "safe?" server list?
A. At the moment the safe lists are available at the follow links:
www.peerates.net
www.emulesecurity.net
www.emule-security.net/news.php

Q. When I start eMule a message pops up. Like: "Impossible downloading the server list from http:// ...."
A. You have probably selected the voice: Options-Servers- automatically download the list server at the starting.
To the right of this voice there is a button denominated "List"; it is not anything else than a text file containing the links to one or more lists servers. In your case it is possible that the link is not valid. Modify the link or unselect this function.

Q. When I start eMule I always find new servers. Yet the list that I have downloaded contained about 20 servers!
A. This happens because on Option-Server you have selected one or both the voices:
Update the server list when you connect a server.
Update the server list when you contact a client.
To avoid that, unselect the two voices, also because it's always better to have in own list, only verified server.

Low ID [go up]

Q. I have a modem supplied by my provider and I have a low ID despite I correctly set the firewall.
A. Usually the modems furnished by the providers are modem/router with an internal configuration; therefore they are to be considered as routers to all the effects (even if in the wrapping is written "modem").

Q. Since I have put a router I find a low ID (yellow arrows). How come?
A. The routers, unlike the modems, assign an internal IP address to the PC that requires to be set as static; besides the two doors that you use for emule (TCP and UDP), must be opened to allow the communication with the outside. Some routers also have an integrated firewall.

Q. I have low ID despite I verified everything. What else should I verify?
A. The most frequent causes of low ID are: router to be set, firewall to be set, antivirus with integrated firewall, IP to be assigned static, problems related to the type of adsl (for instance with many umts subscriptions).

Q. How do I set the static IP?
A. The first thing you should know is your internal IP. Go to Start - Run, and write: ''cmd'' , then press enter. (with Windows Vista: Start - all programs - accessories - prompt of dos). On the window that appears, write: ipconfig/all and press enter; You wil see all the infos about your net and/or wireless cards.
IP, Gateway, Subnet Mask and DNS must be set in the properties of your net card. From the the net connections window, go to the properties of your card, after that on the TCP / IP (or ipv4) properties and there manually set the general card.

Q. I have low ID and they told me that I must open the doors on the router. How should I do?
A. The procedure varies from model to model, therefore it is advisable to follow a guide (on http://portforward.com/ you will find some excellent guides in English Language to create rules you need in your router).
As a rule you must enter the configuration of the router inserting in the address bar of your browser your gateway (for instance http://192.168.0.1/ )and there create two rules to open the TCP and UDP doors of your emule (same doors you have in option-connection) for your internal IP that you will previously have put static (for instance 192.168.0.2).

Credits [go up]

Q. Could I know how many credits I have accumulated till now?
A. No! The credits that you have accumulated till now are on the pc of the other consumers, so you can't know previously how many credits you have. Equally, on your pc will reside the credits that other consumers claim toward you.

Q. In the events registry I read "File of the Client known (and of the relative credits) loaded: they are known 17941 Client, 21 eliminated (they have not been contacted within 5 months)": are 17941 my credits?
A. No. they are, as it says the notice, known client and that is people to which we connected in the last 5 months.

Download speed [go up]

Q. I've heard about possible guides that promise unbelievable speed in download with simple settings of eMule. Are they true?
A. No. No "miraculous" setting allows eMule to download more quickly.
Generally distrust from guides/programs/other users that promise higher speed in download.

Q. I have been downloading a file for a couple of days and it goes slow. What can I do?
A. eMule is not a program to download only a file (or few files), but it is all right with a good number of files at the same time or better a good number of sources in queue (2500 -3500) which usually correspond to 30-40 files with good sources. Only a couple of files will never saturate your download band.

Q. I'm almost finishing the file (I've got more than 90%) and eMule doesn't complete it; it goes very slow. How come?
A. It's' well-known that eMule, near the end of a file, is inclined to slow down the downloading of it.
There is not an official explanation, but is thought that has been done to allow that this file however remains for some time in sharing .
Another hypothesis is that this happens because the last to be downloaded are probably the least diffused chunks; having less "useful" sources a diminution of the speed is therefore predictable.
Be patient; you will finish downloading it in a short while!

Q. I have installed a program that allows me to download faster; in fact I see that my download speed is considerably increased.
A. The programs to increase eMules' speed don't help at all. Following recent tests has been shown that in reality that programs, like Speeder XP, cheat the processor, and therefore they show a speed that is the double than the real. Besides may contain spywares and can cause serious problems to your hardware.
Only the other users decide what and whether let you download and there is no way to change that.

Q. I download more quickly with the torrent clients than with emule!
A. It's true, neverthless on eMule can be found much more material that on torrent you would hardly find. Furthermore, unlike the torrents, emule can autonomously (without the aid of servers) work without any deceleration during the download, and it has the possibility to directly perform searches through the program, without the aid of external internet sites.

Q. Does putting the files in release make me go faster?
A. The priority release doesn't do anything else than privilege the dispatch of a file in comparison to the others, therefore you will earn more credits for that file at detriment of the others and you will download more quickly ONLY that file. Putting so many files (or even all) in release doesn't have sense because would not have sense anymore the concept of priority.

Security [go up]

Q. Could i take viruses With eMule?
A. Viruses can exclusively be taken if you download an infected file (for instance a program or a crack) but surely eMule doesn't contains viruses or send them to the users.

Q. What is the darkening of the protocol?
A. It's a particular characteristic of eMule that allows to "encrypt" the data sent to other clients and servers so that they cannot easily be recognized anymore.
This function has been added starting from the version 0.47b, mainly to let an ISP work more to recognize that a certain pc is using eMule and therefore does more work to filter it.

Q. How can I protect myself from people that wants to spy me?
A. Three methods exist and unfortunately NONE of these can give you the absolute certainty not to be spied:
1) the most obvious, not to use the servers; how said previously, this doesn't involve any deceleration in the downloads, but only in the searches.
2) Use the so-called "IP filters " and periodically update them; you can find them, both with a guide step by step (complete of images) about how to install them, on this site: www.emulesecurity.net
Even if you don't use the servers, it is a good idea to use the IP filters, since they also have effect on the KAD net, from which you can in every case be spied.
3) Install a program called PeerGuardian, that develops a function similar to that of the IP filters and that you can safely use with the them.
You can find it in this site: http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

Q. When I search for something appear me names of files with additionally "shareaccelerator" or similar things. What they are?
A. They are results of server/client that pollute the searches.
It's better to equip yourself with a good IP filter (for instance from www.emulesecurity.net ) and to equip yourself with a software like PeerGuardian.

Ports and ISP filter [go up]

Q. Which are the doors to use in the eMule settings? Are there any faster than others?
A. If you have got a simple modem you can leave the default settings of eMule, using if you want random doors that changes at every eMule starting.
If you have a router you must always use the same 2 doors and open them in its configuration to allow the communication with the outside.
Usually the most used are TCP 4662 - UDP 4672 or TCP 1755 - UDP 1756 (these last two recommended for users of Libero). Generally there are no ports faster than others, therefore the choice is very arbitrary, It's enough that the value is among the 1024 and 65535.

Q. I have the suspicion that my provider filters me, because during the day I don't succeed in practically downloading any files despite the line is correctly working, but after midnight it also goes above the 100 Kb/s. What can I do?
A. We know for sure that the p2p traffic is filtered by some providers (Tele2 and Infostrada for the firsts), sometimes also only in some zones (politics adopted by Alice). Unfortunately at the moment there is not a decisive solution but only some tricks to try to limit the damages. To use eMule without this obstacle is it advisable to change the provider, most of all if it limits the band and the customer doesn't know, and don't mentioning this thing in the contract of services provisioning!

Q. Why despite the fact that I have a high ID/kad not firewalled the doors test gives me negative results?
A. If you are regularly connected to the servers and/or to kad, don't care about the door's test. It often gives you uncorrect results.

Q. How can I cheat the filters?
A. It depends on the filters adopted by the provider. The possible solutions are:
1) set in the options the use of the only darkened connections and set some doors for the TCP and UDP different from those standard of eMule (decreasing the connections per second and max can be useful too).
With certain types of filtering this kind of solution is not enough and needs to fall back on the 2 or 3.
2) Use an external proxy
3) Change provider (highly recommended).

Q. What is a proxy?
A. A proxy is a service that let pass all your traffic by means an unique connection toward a server from which depart all of your connections. Our computer seems to go to the internet from another IP address. This also has the effect to make the navigation and the p2p anonymous besides to make p2p traffic unrecognizable when goes out of our PC (it also allows to cheat the anti p2p filters).

Q. Where do I find these proxies?
A. The most efficient (and cheap) proxies for p2p are:
http://www.swissvpn.net/
https://www.relakks.com/?cid=gb
As a matter of fact, they realize a proxy using a so-called VPN connection.
The suggestion is also to use google to document on these services since the quality of the same changes with the time, and other born, newer and better.

Q. Is the proxy a definitive solution?
A. No, it is recommended only in the case where is not possible to change provider for particular reasons or to use in the period of pause of the operator change. The only way to protect the p2p is to reward the providers that don't filter it.

Friends, messages and spam [go up]

Q. How can I contact another eMule's user?
A. All it takes is going to the window transfers, you can find them both as source of a file that you are downloading (double click on a file in download) or in your queue (click on the image of the 4 blue little men in line), after that, right mouse on his name -> send a message.
Note that it is not sure that he will answers you. Most of the users leave eMule downloading and turns away from the pc or uses it for other things.

Q. What is sthe "Friends' List " and how can I add an user?
A. The friends' list it is a handy function to keep in touch with other users and to check if their eMule is turned on. To add someone to the friends' list, is sufficient to click with the right mouse on their name (found with the suggested method in the previous faq) and select "add to the friends." Done this, you can check their state in the messages window .

Q. I'm continually bothered by various messages that arrive me; they often begin with names like: Zambor 2, Hypermule etc. What can I do?
A. You can filter these messages inserting a special filter.
To do so you must go on: Options, Messages and Comments and insert the word to filter (for instance Zambor 2) in the box "Filter Messages Containing : ". You must separate the various words with the separator "|".
A possible filter can be this:
Your client has an infinite queue|Your client is connecting too fast|fastest download speed|Zambor 2|eMule FX|DI-Emule V.2.0|l33cher|in your town|ultra2|HyperMule|Ultra3|mod leecher
Another method more "brutal" to filter unwanted messages is to accept these messages only from the friends.
To do this go on Options, Messages and Comments and select "Accept only from the Friends."

Q. When I send a message to someone, this answer pops up: "To avoid the messages of Spam, this user requires that you solve a Captcha' before you can send him a message. Insert as answer....
A. It's a function introduced since the vers. 0.49a with the purpose to verify if the person that sends a message is indeed a person and not a bot or a mod that sends messages of spam.
It's simply required to insert a certain code to show to be a person.
It's activable/deactivable from option-messages and comments.
Please note: if you activate such option all the people that have previous versions to the 0.49a could not send you any message.

Miscellaneous [go up]

Q. When I use eMule I can't surf the net or download the e-mail anymore.
A. This problem usually appears when band limit in upload is not set.
Usually we are inclined to set around 80% of the available maximum band in upload that your provider guarantees you.

Q. Why after a while that I'm using use eMule, the router disconnects?
A. The routers don't generally succeed on keeping the elevated number of connections that eMule creates.
It's advisable to plan max 150 maximum connections (goto Options, Connection, Maximum Connections) if a router is used.

Q. Every time that I start eMule the pc sends a "beep" at regular intervals!
A. Nothing serious, eMule is warning you that there is little space left on the hard disk. This control can be deactivated in: Options -> Advanced Options -> Advanced Options ->(yes, again, what an imagination these planners) going a few lines below you should read "Control Space on Disk." At this point you can remove the check to deactivate the control (and the beep), or to set the minimum free space that emule must leave on the hd, over which it begins to pause the download and to send "beeps".

Q. What is a “friend slot”?
A. To assign a friend slot to an user that is downloading a file from You means that your eMule will make him automatically jump the queue and let him download until an undefined time (instead of stop at canonical 9,28 Mb). A friend slot, as it is defined, can be only assigned to an user which is present in your friends' list. To assign it You just have to go to the “Messages” window -> right click on the name -> assign friend slot (there is also the option to remove it). Friend slots should be ONLY used to help the diffusion of rare files, for instance when You share a file (self made one, so to speak). Furthermore it is not rare that two users that are downloading the same file exchange a slot, You give it to him and he gives it to You; this way the users help themselves, making the download quicker. eMule “forgets” the friend slots You assigned every time You turn it off (not true in some modalities). The number of assignable friend slots is 1, but some modalities allow to assign a higher number of it (these modalities usually apply a 1:3 (UL:DL) ratio to avoid the abuse of of this feature or if You set the speed of the friend slot > 3 kb/s).

Q. What is a Chunk?
A. The Chunk is defined as a part of a file corresponding to 9,28 Mb.

Q. What is the dynamic upload?
A. It is a function of eMule that, if set (Options-Advanced Options-Dynamic upload-autofind best upload limit), lets that the program manages by itself the upload limit depending on the available band.

Q. I have got Windows 98/Me; is there any particular setting?
A. For the characteristics of these O.S. it's advisable to drastically lower the number of maximum sources for file (100) and maximum connections (80); it is not advisable the use of the Kad net.
It's advisable to arrange the settings so that the maximum number of found sources doesn't overcome the 3000.

Unfortunately it is not a definitive rule (it also depends on the rest of the hardware of the pc too) therefore you can start more or less from that values and change them accordingly.

Q. I have an old pc and eMule uses too many resources. What can I do for relieving it a little?
A. Generally the things that can be eliminated are:
1) options, General, Remove the check in "Show Splash Screen"

2) options, Aspect, uncheck:
2.1) "show completion percentage in the Progress Bar"
2.2) "show the transfer speeds in the title bar"
2.3) "Automatic completion"

Select
2.4) "deactivate the clients known list"
2.5) "deactivate the queued clients list"
2.6) "do not update the queue in real time"
2.7) "do not to recreate the graphs at the resizing"

Furthermore, move the slider of: " Bar Style of the Progress on "Flat"

3) options, Advanced Options, deactivate the "Deepened Register"
If you're really in a shortage of performances deselect "deactivate the A4AF search to save CPU."
Always from here it is possible to save RAM decreasing the "Dimension Buffer for the Files" (advisable not to go below the 256KBs) and decreasing the Dimension queue (advisable not to go below the 2500).

Q. When I open eMule this error pops up: "Not valid Link: This eD2K Link is not valid (The inserted Link is not an eD2K link or link to a valid file). How should I solve it?
A. Usually this error is due to some files type emule collection in sharing. Try to see if one or more than these files are present among the shared ones and, if yes, delete one at a time until the error disappears. If you want, you can also leave the files and skip the error.

Q. How come sometimes just completed a download, it goes back of about ten Mb from the total downloaded for subsequently completing it later?
A. It means that it has found damaged parts and it has to download them again; eMule always checks the files when it completes them thanks to the ICH and AICH systems
